How Much at Root is Population a Problem?
Susan A. McDaniel
This lecture was offered in conjunction with the Doctor of Social Sciences Program residency.
McDaniel is a Professor of Sociology and Prentice Research Chair in Global Population at the University of Lethbridge. Her research focuses on life course, demographic aging, generational relations, family change and the social impacts of technology. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the recipient of awards including the University Cup by the University of Alberta for a career record of excellence in both research and teaching, the J. Gordon Kaplan Award for Research Excellence, and the lifetime honorific title, Distinguished University Professor. She has been Professor of Sociology at the Universities of Alberta, Waterloo, and Windsor. McDaniel is the author of seven books and research monographs, over 170 research articles and book chapters and is a frequent keynote speaker at national and international conferences. She is an advisor to governments in Canada, the UK and the EU on social statistics, social policies, and science/technology and innovation policies and official data collection.

Justice Thomas Berger - March 3rd, 2010
Justice Berger has been one of the pre-eminent legal figures in the history of this province. He was counsel for the Nisga'a nation of B.C. in a case in which the Supreme Court recognized the place of aboriginal rights in Canadian law. He was the youngest judge appointed to the Supreme Court in the 20th Century, and served for 12 years. The lecture is the first of three presentations offered in conjunction with the Doctor of Social Sciences Program residency.

Homecoming 2008 saw hundreds of alumni – both RRU and ex-cadet – join staff and special guests around a newly constructed, landscaped plaza in front of the former vice-commandant’s house on Sunday, September 14. The occasion was the re-dedication of a mast originally raised in front of Hatley Castle 66 years ago when the Royal Canadian Naval College was created.

In just a few years, thousands of people from around the world will be able to share his passion for the natural world at the Robert Bateman Art and Environmental Education Centre, to be constructed on the campus of Royal Roads University. Bateman and his wife, photographer Birgit Freybe Bateman, announced June 23 that they will donate an extensive collection of Robert Bateman’s original artwork and prints, Robert and Birgit Bateman’s photographs, and archival material such as sketch books and correspondence, to form the centre’s core collection.
