Learning Model
The MA in Tourism Management is a 36-credit, four module program that combines both online courses and blended courses. The Tourism Leadership module and Applied Research module are compulsory allowing students to choose two additional modules to complete their degree.
The program is organized and delivered in four thematic modules; each approximately six months in length. See the diagram below.
Compulsory Modules:
Tourism Leadership Module: Three courses, nine credits, taught online plus one eight-day destination residency in Victoria, B.C. See the diagram below.
Applied Tourism Research Module:
Two courses, nine credits, delivered 100 percent online. Students are individually mentored while working on their research paper. To enroll in this module, applicants must have completed at least two of the three other modules first.

Students will typically complete the course work in one module before progressing to the next. However, due to the module start dates, there may be a short period of overlap in completing one module while the second one begins.
Sequencing Your Learning
It is anticipated that the majority of students will complete the MA in Tourism Management in approximately two and a half years of part-time study. Due to the dynamic nature of the tourism industry and hospitality sector, and for maximum flexibility, students may choose to complete the degree over three, four or five years. Depending on the schedule each year, overlapping and fast-tracking is also an option.
Declaring Learning Sequence
As soon as participants confirm their acceptance into the program, the School Manager will contact them to discuss the module offerings (diagram below) to determine the MA in Tourism Management date sequencing that best suits the student’s lifestyle. See schedule below.

Blended Courses
Blended courses are a combination of online and face-to-face learning. Three of the four modules have a residency component that delivers a portion of a course, the remainder is delivered online. Residencies involve a high degree of face-to-face interaction, teamwork, connecting to the local area experts and optimizing the natural and cultural environment of the university campus, located on Hatley Park National Historic Site.
Online Courses
Online courses are completed 100 percent online. There is no face-to-face interaction.
Combining Theory and Practice
As an applied university, we bring theory and practice into the curriculum as we ‘live our learning’ and engage students with the local tourism community and industry experts. We incorporate rich learning opportunities through familiarization trips to tourism businesses, non-traditional partners, and government offices in Victoria and the South Island. We incorporate our own developing destination activities on Hatley Park National Historic Site. As stewards of one of Canada’s largest heritage properties, we are intimately familiar with the operational realities of working in the tourism industry and take pride in being both a tourism operator and educator. It keeps us grounded in the real world and in touch with the requirements of operating a year-round tourism business.
