Shelley Williamson, MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding

Students for Development Internship, Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada

Lack or inadequate education on voter rights, peaceful resolution to election irregularities and peacebuilding concepts are seen as contributing factors to reducing election-related violence in Uganda.

In Arua, Uganda, Williamson set out to provide education and information at the grassroots level to women and youth with the aim of helping to prevent or minimize violence during the 2010-2011 elections. The project may help future programming to assist women and youth of Arua to participate more fully in the governance process, and to provide future students with a better understanding of challenges faced in governance equity for Ugandan women and youth.
