Naomi Harris - BA in International Hotel Management

Growing up in a small Northern Ontario community, I had my first taste of the hospitality industry as a waitress aboard Cochrane's Polar Bear Express. The four-hour train ride north takes tourists from all over the world to Moosonee, which is situated at the tip of James Bay and can only be accessed by train or air. My summer employment aboard the train enabled me to meet many interesting people, which later led to my decision to pursue a career in tourism and travel.

I went on to complete a diploma in Tourism and Travel in Peterborough, Ontario at Sir Sanford Fleming College.  In my final year at Fleming College I sat in on a presentation by Mr. Ted Wykes. Ted discussed the educational opportunities available to students interested in pursuing a BA in International Hotel Management at Royal Roads University. Although I did not have a lot of prior experience working in the tourism sector, I decided to apply to the program and was ecstatic when I received my letter of admission.

The BA- International Hotel Management Program offered at Royal Roads University has been a great learning experience that I have thoroughly enjoyed. The small classroom setting allows for more one-on-one teaching and also the opportunity to form bonds with your classmates. I found all of my instructors to be very encouraging, and I felt that they genuinely want to see you succeed.

Through the BA International Hotel Management Program at Royal Roads, I have secured an internship, which also turned into a one-year contract with Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, located in Ucluelet, B.C. I am looking forward to learning all the ins and outs of this exciting industry. I am thankful for my time here at Royal Roads, as it has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to embrace my new career with confidence.
