Gurpavan Kaur Gill, MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding
Students for Development Internship Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
In India, almost half the population cannot afford lighting for their homes based on their current income levels and the high cost of electrical generation.
During her internship, Gill visited villages in Bangalore, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh to help install solar lighting and water pumps in underserved regions and to promote sustainable development through the use of renewable energy rather than conventional energy sources. As a study, Gill focused on government policies related to renewable energy as directed by SELCO-India, and the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission set forth by the government of India to provide electricity to all rural villages and hamlets by 2022.
