How can Royal Roads University leverage the benefit of having students with a disability in its programs? Under the supervision of Dr. Fred Jacques, Bergeron explored the experiences and learnings of her cohort and faculty of having a student with a disability in their program, and potential strategies for leveraging the benefits.
Thematic analysis of the data collected resulted in three main conclusions: benefits do exist, removal of barriers is needed to experience the benefits fully, and education and communication are required for success. The conclusions from the study informed the development of four inquiry recommendations: creation of an advisory board; creation of a community of practice; development of educational and training materials; and implementation of policies on Universal Design practices.
