Bruce Adkins - Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching
...Everything I set out to achieve from the completion of my certification at Royal Roads has happened
Royal Roads has always intrigued me.
I remember high school friends who attended Military College there. It was a presence that was hard to forget; just the mere sight of the castle and the campus was beautiful. I set my intention back then, of somehow attending the school one day.
When I started looking at various coaching opportunities I was working with a coach and so I was aware of a number of different programs. I came back to Royal Roads, and after researching their program I was pleased to find that it worked well for me.
It has been 30 years since I finished my bachelor’s degree, although I’ve always been involved in some type of learning over the years. I took to the program willingly and found it refreshing to get back into an academic environment.
The program at Royal Roads matched my needs and lifestyle as I could complete the program and continue my work. But with 20-25 hours per week on top of what I already do, I don’t know where I found the time to actually do it!
The first part of the program was about personal mastery and working to be the best that you can be. That piece was very important grounding for me as a coach. The second part was based around coaching in organizations, which was right in line with what I needed to know for my organization.
I recall one week in the program where we discussed learning disabilities in organizations. That same week I had a meeting with an executive team at work and in that very meeting we displayed every one of those disabilities. If I had not gone through this learning module I would not have been able recognized this. The curriculum is so current it enabled me to apply those lessons immediately in my professional life.
The whole RRU experience was such a benefit. I came out of the program with a clear understanding of how I was going to apply this to my work. I developed a business plan for an internal coach with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and this has happened. In fact, everything I set out to achieve from the completion of my certification at Royal Roads has happened. This is shaping up to be a new career for me. How many people you do you know have the luxury of embarking on a new career at the age of 57?
