Brian Thiessen, MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding
J. Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada
Community policing is the main form of policing in western society and proven to have a positive impact on crime rates, fear of crime, police satisfaction, victimization, human rights violations, and civil society development and involvement.
Under the academic guidance of Dr. Evan Hoffman, Thiessen conducted an analysis of the impact of community policing initiatives on human security in Windhoek, Namibia. The findings revealed that the community governed City Police is more successful at achieving human security for its citizenry when compared to the para-military national police force. However, to implement community policing successfully, trust and rapport must first be established. These finding are assisting the Windhoek City Police Service to restructure their organization, develop a strategic plan, and properly choose and effectively implement community policing programs that will affect human security and peacebuilding in Windhoek.
