Amy Jones - BA in Justice Studies (BA-JUS)

The one-year on-campus Bachelor of Justice Studies program at Royal Roads University is an exceptional way to gain an education faster so one can enter the workforce earlier. It’s also an extremely interesting program that can guide you in so many different directions. I went into the program with the plan of going on to law school but with all the varied subject areas covered within the one year, I found new ways of applying my knowledge and learned of different types of jobs linked to my area of study.

I am a visual and hands-on learner so my most valuable learning experience happened during my practicum at the Victoria Youth Custody Center. I had learned so much from my studies at Royal Roads but personally knew very little about the youth justice system so I had to incorporate old learning with new learning and it was amazing.

Although I learned a lot in the program, my learning was not just about the justice system. I learned more about who I am as a person and I believe that will prove invaluable in the justice field because I must know myself before I can start understanding the feelings of others. I feel like a changed person because I am no longer struggling with questions about where I want to go with my life and how I am going to get there. My family was very supportive, too, and helped me through the tough times when I was struggling with the workload.

Had it not also been for the helping hands and listening ears of program head Erich Schellhammer and associate faculty member Barbara Schellhammer, I would never have been able to succeed in this program. They are so patient and so driven that it is hard not to share their love of philosophy and the justice system. They went out of their way to help with anything we needed because they felt that if we were not happy and succeeding, then they had failed.

Royal Roads University provided me with exactly what I was looking for: smaller class sizes and face-to-face interaction with professors and peers.
