RRU announces architect

New academic building project moves forward

Goldstream News Gazette - Wednesday, July 16, 2008, page A5

Jensen Chernoff Thompson Architects, a Victoria-based firm, was selected from 30 Canadian applicants to build the first new building at Royal Roads University in 12 years.

Dubbed the Learning and Innovation Centre, the space will make room for the school’s growing student body as the existing buildings are overcrowded and aging, said Stephanie Slater, RRU communications.

Royal Roads offers programs to 3,000 students through classroom and online learning. The current campus was built to accommodate 300 military cadets.

“A highly effective delivery model can only take us so far,” RRU president Allan Cahoon said in a press release. “This new building will allow us to take our next step in academic development, which entails growth in both the number of students and the number of programs we offer.”

The building is just shy of 4,600 square metres and should be two- to three-storeys tall. Built behind the Grant Building, the new building will meet the gold standard for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

The building is estimated to cost $23.6 million. The provincial government is contributing $15 million. The remaining funds will come from internal financing and fundraising.

Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2009 and be completed by 2010.
