FAQs

1. English is not my first language. Will I be able to cope?
English is the primary language of instruction and communication in all programs at Royal Roads University. All applicants seeking admission to the MA in Professional Communication program must have an adequate knowledge of written and spoken English as a prerequisite for admission to the university. If an applicant’s previous education took place in another language, they must score a minimum of 575 on the TOEFL test or acceptable alternative test. A higher score would enhance an applicant’s successful participation in the program.

Good writing skills are very important. An English Composition (or equivalent) university-level English course with B+ or better is a prerequisite. Alternatively, students should provide some other proof of your ability to write clear and correct English (eg. published writing; a marked essay from a previous course, with details about the marker and content).

More information on Royal Roads University's policy on English Language Proficiency.

Please note that our program has set higher proficiency scores for admission. This is because good English skills are an important prerequisite for success in communication studies.

2. As an international student, will I need to obtain a student visa?
According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, students do not need to obtain student visas to attend the three-week residencies. However, depending on the internal policies of individual nations, it may be well-advised to obtain a student visa as a safeguard, since not all immigration officials may be aware of the nature of Royal Roads University’s academic programs.

3. As an international student, will I be able to work on or off campus while I’m in residence?
Participation in the academic programs does not enable students to seek employment on or off campus in Canada. If a student is a permanent resident or has a work permit, they may be able to accept employment but they should be aware that they will not be able to work at any time during the three-week residencies.

4. What other costs will there be?
Students will have to pay for housing and meals during residencies, either on or off campus, as well as textbooks and supplies, and all computer expenses such as subscriptions to Internet providers and software purchases. Expect to pay about $1000 in Canadian dollars for books and supplies, plus any costs for new computer purchases, upgrades and software.
