Learning Model
Consistent with the ‘blended’ approach to teaching in the BA in Professional Communication program, our courses are developed and delivered in several different forms. The program uses a number of different delivery methods including face-to-face instruction, textbooks, reading packages, case studies, and interactive Internet learning using discussion groups (bulletin boards) and synchronous ‘real time’ chat for online tutorials. Courses also make use of unit notes, which are study guides written by faculty to support learning of the particular subject matter.
The major delivery models are as follows.
Face-to-face courses make use of lectures, seminars, and workshops, and are taught on the Royal Roads University campus.
Tutorial courses mix online and face-to-face learning. A tutorial course may feature online resources like unit notes and an asynchronous discussion space; lectures or seminars on a less frequent basis than face-to-face course; or involve one-on-one coaching and consultation between faculty and students. Multi-media skills-based courses and professional communication courses are typically offered in tutorial format.
The online courses make use of Royal Roads University’s own distance learning platform, called ‘Moodle’. Prior to beginning each course, students are provided with a package of materials and readings. Student’s work through the requirements of the course at their own convenience, (although there are ‘real time’ deadlines for assignments, exams, etc.).
