For immediate release – Feb. 27, 2009
Victoria, B.C. – Royal Roads University once again delivers the most active and collaborative learning environment in Canada according to results from a national student evaluation survey published in a recent edition of Maclean’s Magazine.
“A learner-focused collaborative approach to education is a core value for Royal Roads” said Allan Cahoon, president and vice chancellor of RRU. “That philosophy creates a strong collaborative and supportive environment between learners and faculty. So we are very proud to have achieved national prominence on such an important element of our unique educational model.”
Undergraduate students at Royal Roads University participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) for assessing student experience as a measure of quality. Of the 47 Canadian universities that participated in 2007 and 2008, Royal Roads was rated first nationally for active and collaborative learning, which accounts for involvement, teamwork among students, making presentations or participating in community-based projects.
RRU placed third among participating institutions for its level of academic challenge, which assesses intellectual demands placed on undergraduate students assessed through assigned readings, written reports, and coursework that emphasizes judgment.
Royal Roads placed ninth in providing a supportive campus environment which is assessed by how universities support academic and non-academic endeavours and cultivate positive relationships among students, faculty and staff.
The report on universities appeared in the Feb. 16 edition of Maclean’s Magazine. The NSSE surveyed 747 universities in Canada and the U.S. and Maclean’s says the results suggest that smaller schools do better at helping students get the best learning experience from their university.
