How Elections Persuade – a free public symposium
The School of Communication and Culture at Royal Roads University will host a panel discussion Thursday, Oct. 30 on how professional communicators manage media and face-to-face meetings to influence voters. Both the Canadian and American elections will be discussed.
Panelists include:
• Dr. Colin Bennett, chair of the political science department at University of Victoria
• Dr. Gilbert Wilkes, professor at RRU, Rita Fromhold, communication chair of the Briony Penn campaign
• Harjinder Thind, producer and host of the Vancouver-based Harjinder Thind Show on Red-FM 93.1.

The free sessions are part of the evaluation program participants undergo to assess competencies learned over the program’s six-month course of instruction. Hatley Castle’s 100 years of heritage commemorated with Fangs for the Memories
The celebration of Hatley Castle’s 100th anniversary is taking a chilling turn with Fangs for the Memories: A Century of Chills at Hatley Castle Oct. 25, 2008. This suspenseful murder mystery takes place during the 10-year class reunion of RRU’s fictional Global Hostel and International Eco-Travel. The body count grows during a mysterious foreigner’s acceptance speech for an honorary degree. Doors open at 6: 30 pm, for the 7:00 pm show. A night of chilling tales, Haunted Passages not for the weak
Just in time for All Hallows Eve: an evening of spine-tingling terror on Nov. 1 at 7:00 pm at Hatley Castle. Haunted Passages is a night of eerie suspenseful ghost tales told by members of the Victoria Storyteller’s Guild. The dark stories are followed by a shiver-inducing tour of the castle, which is reputed to be haunted itself. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students and seniors. Ducks raise bucks for the United Way
The second annual rubber duck race for the United Way at Royal Roads University will provide a great media photo opportunity Wednesday, Oct. 29 noon – 1:00 pm. The School of Environment and Sustainability and the School of Information and Society are selling ducks for $2 each, which will be raced down Colwood Creek on the east side of the RRU campus. All proceeds will benefit the RRU United Way campaign which was launched Oct. 9 and has already raised more than $42,262 – 70 per cent of this year’s financial goal. News announcer Hudson Mack of A News will provide colour commentary for the race.

Calendar note: RRU Convocation Nov. 7
Fall convocation at Royal Roads University will take place Friday, Nov. 7 with two ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively. Two recipients will be awarded honorary degrees and one person will receive the Chancellor’s Community Recognition Award. A news release will be issued Nov. 6.
