Victoria, B.C. – The widow of a former Royal Roads officer cadet has committed to match up to $15,000 in donations to a new bursary fund to help Royal Roads University students in sudden financial need.

In memory of her husband Howard Dorrance, who died May 5, 2009, Gloria Dorrance has created the Howard Dorrance Staff Legacy Bursary fund and has committed to match all donations made to the fund before Dec. 31, 2010 to a maximum of $15,000.

“Howard was a school principal, a great believer in the power of education and an avid participant in providing funding to students in need,” said Gloria Dorrance. “He also had a strong connection to Royal Roads as he was an officer cadet and spent his summers on the campus for training.”

Family members remember Howard Dorrance as a person with a strong work ethic and a commitment to help find solutions for students with educational challenges. He and Gloria retired to Victoria in 1991 after his 24-year career as an elementary school principal in Montreal.

The fund has been established in response to an increased need for emergency funding for RRU students due to unforeseen and exceptional circumstances. The university’s goal is to raise $30,000 for the bursary which will be awarded annually in the amount of the interest earned on the endowment to a maximum $2,000.

The bursary is part of the Royal Roads University Legacy Campaign, which aims to raise $100 million for projects to support learning, sustainability and heritage preservation.
