RRU to Support Families of Fallen - Through Project Hero
Victoria - Royal Roads University has joined Project Hero, a scholarship program for the children of Canadian Armed Forces personnel killed while on active military duty.
"Given Royal Roads University's close academic and historical links to Canada's armed forces, we are honoured to support this scholarship initiative, both as a mark of our esteem for the sacrifices made by fallen members of the armed forces and as a contribution to the formation of future generations of Canadian leaders," says RRU Vice President, Academic and Provost, Dr Thomas Chase.
Royal Roads University will provide qualified students with a scholarship for the equivalent of two years of full-time tuition fees for its undergraduate degree completion programs (equivalent to years three and four of a baccalaureate degree). The scholarship program will be in place until Dec. 31, 2015 when it will be reviewed for potential renewal. It applies to children of members of the Canadian Forces who were killed while serving in an active mission from February 2002, the start of Canada's involvement in Afghanistan.
Ontario businessman and honorary lieutenant-colonel Kevin Reed helped create Project Hero in collaboration with retired General Rick Hillier with the hope of gaining support from post-secondary institutions from across Canada.
"Royal Roads University is a valuable link in a national network of universities that continues to expand," said Reed about the agreement. "I am delighted they have come on board.
As the site of a former military college, Royal Roads University continues to nurture strong ties with the Canadian Armed Forces. Members of its student body and faculty include serving and retired military personnel.
Royal Roads University was established by the Province of British Columbia in 1995 specifically to deliver quality applied and professional programs to advance professionals in the workplace. The university blends online and on-campus learning with current, real-world relevance for graduate and undergraduate degrees, certificates, diplomas, executive and custom education.
