Victoria, B.C. - A new agreement between Royal Roads University and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts will pave the way for the university's graduate certificate programs in tourism management to be delivered in Vancouver starting in September of 2010.

The agreement establishes a scholarship for Fairmont employees to enrol in RRU's graduate certificate Tourism programs.  Royal Roads will also receive support from Fairmont in marketing and delivering its programs in Vancouver.

"We are excited to be working with Royal Roads to help our industry continue to grow, said Mark Andrew, regional vice-president, Pacific Northwest and General Manager for Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. "Initiatives such as this are key to preparing our leaders of tomorrow for the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,"

"Graduate programs are essential for the tourism industry," said Brian White, director of RRU's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. "This agreement will make our tourism certificate programs more accessible and convenient for students in Vancouver and will mean that B.C. tourism professionals will remain competitive on the world stage."

The school delivers six programs to the tourism industry: a bachelor's degree in international hotel management, a master's degree in tourism management, and four graduate certificates in international hotel and resort management, sustainable tourism, destination development, and tourism leadership.

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Royal Roads University is the first of its kind to allow working professionals to earn graduate level education while continuing to work full time.
Royal Roads University was established by the Province of British Columbia in 1995 as a special purpose university charged with advancing professionals in the workplace. It is the only public university in Canada exclusively designed for this demographic and, as such, all its programs and research are focused on applied, real-world relevance and experience.
