Royal Roads partnership with China region supports creation of Eco-City
Royal Roads University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hangu Administrative Commission of Tianjin Binhai New Area (HABA) to develop skills and support the region's goals of creating an eco-city.
Among the eight specific objectives, Royal Roads will facilitate training in environmental management, tourism, leadership, entrepreneurship and communication to a broad spectrum of Chinese society, from high school students to university students to working civil servants, many of whom will come to Victoria to receive this education.
"We have the great fortune of being able to work with Tianjin Binhai New Area and collaborate on research and education that matches the university's strategic goals," said Cyndi McLeod, vice president of marketing and business development at Royal Roads University. "Environmental sustainability is a founding principle of this university, so the opportunity to work with a community in mainland China to develop and nurture best practices on the environment is very exciting for us."
The agreement builds upon another agreement signed in the fall with Tianjin University of Technology and Royal Roads University to deliver a joint master's degree in environmental management; a master's that Royal Roads has been delivering in Canada for more than a decade.
"HABA, as an economic zone is promises to challenge Pudong in Shanghai," McLeod said. "This is a partnership that will bring great economic benefits to British Columbia."
The five-year agreement signed this summer will mean a wide array of opportunities for exchange between Royal Roads and its HABA partners in China. In some cases Royal Roads will deliver its programs in China, in others students will come to Royal Roads for their educational experience.
The City of Colwood, where Royal Roads is located will also get the opportunity to work with HABA to stimulate economic exchanges. Primary and secondary school principals from HABA will get education management training. Royal Roads will work with HABA in the development of an Eco-City, a showcase for cutting edge sustainable practices.
Royal Roads University was established by the Province of British Columbia in 1995 specifically to deliver quality applied and professional programs to advance professionals in the workplace. The university blends online and on-campus learning with current, real-world relevance for doctorate, graduate and undergraduate degrees, certificates, diplomas, executive and custom education.
