Canada’s first Doctor of Social Sciences degree launched at RRU
Victoria, B.C. - Canada's first Doctor of Social Sciences degree program got underway this week at Royal Roads University. Designed to respond to the country's growing demand for scholar-practitioners with advanced, applied research credentials, the new four-year program will significantly change the landscape of doctoral education in Canada.
"This program fills a gap in the Canadian academic marketplace that has been identified as a priority by the public and private sector as much as academe," says Jim Bayer, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences at Royal Roads. "Our experience in successfully delivering innovative graduate degrees for working professionals uniquely positions us to do so."
Three free, public lectures are scheduled as part of the first residency of the Doctor of Social Sciences program:
March 3 - From the Mackenzie Valley to Nunavut: Global Challenges in the Canadian Context.
Justice Thomas Berger will give a free public lecture entitled, From the Mackenzie Valley to Nunavut: Global Challenges in the Canadian Context. Wednesday, March 3, 7:00 - p.m.
March 10 - Transcending Boundaries: Explorations Across the Social, Natural, and Health Sciences.
Two internationally renowned scholars will speak on transdisciplinary research Wednesday, March 10. David J. Rapport and Luisa Maffi will deliver the guest lecture. Rapport is one of the originators of the concept of ecosystem health and is editor-in-chief of the journal Ecosystem Health. Maffi has pioneered the concept of biocultural diversity. She is co-founder and director of Terralingua, an international non-governmental organization devoted to sustaining biocultural diversity through research, education, policy relevant work, and on-the-ground action. March 17 - How Much at Root is Population a Problem?
A lecture by sociologist Dr. Susan A. McDaniel, the Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy and director of the Prentice Institute at University of Lethbridge, Alberta. Wednesday March 17, 7:00 p.m.
