Matthew Heinz has worked as a reporter, writer and editor in newspaper newsrooms in the United States. He is an instructional design and public information specialist. His work as a student and professional journalist was recognized by more than 20 first- and second-place awards in national and regional journalism competitions.

Heinz is originally from Germany, but has spent two decades living and working in North America. Prior to joining Royal Roads University, he taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Bowling Green State University and the University of North Dakota.

His work focuses on language, culture and communication, with a particular interest in issues that relate to cultural and sexual identity. His published work has appeared in The Journal of Pragmatics, Multilingua, Communication Teacher, Journal of Homosexuality, Communication Education, The Journal of International Communication, Communication Studies and the Journal of Cognition and Communication.

Heinz is the recipient of the Central States Communication Association Outstanding New Teacher Award in 2001 and his master’s thesis was selected as the outstanding thesis at Fort Hays State University in 1989.
