Brian Belcher joined Royal Roads University as Director of the Centre for Livelihoods and Ecology in September 2007. For 10 years he worked out of the Centre for International Forestry Research in Bogor, Indonesia as principal scientist in the Forests and Livelihoods Program. He worked another four years with International Development Research Centre's International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) based in New Delhi, India.
His work focuses on rural development and resource use mostly in Asia. He has led international, multi-case comparative studies of small-scale commercial forest production case studies. Today he is overseeing projects across Canada and around the world.
His work seeks to understand and improve the role and potential of natural resources in meeting sustainable development goals.
Belcher was born in Manitoba and earned his B.Sc. in Biology (Ecology) from the University of Winnipeg, his Master`s of Natural Resources Management from the University of Manitoba and his PhD in Forestry (Economics and Policy) from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. He conducts research in a variety of resource management settings.
