Since being awarded Royal Roads University's first Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Community Development in 2004, Ann Dale has received national and international recognition for her ground-breaking research in the field of sustainable development focused on the areas of governance, social capital, and sustainable community development.
Dale is committed to trans-disciplinary research, building collaborations and research networks from multiple fields that maximize impacts at both the community and policymaking levels. Her research promotes the sharing of strategies and tools to help communities and organizations develop in more sustainable ways.
Dale is deeply committed to dialogue, which has included her leading over 45 on-line real-time e-Dialogues on critical public policy issues. She actively experiments with the use of different social media for research dissemination, and has recently launched her own YouTube channel, HEADTalks.
An active researcher, Dale also leads MC3, a climate change adaptation and mitigation research program studying best practices and innovations in community climate change responses throughout the province of British Columbia. In addition, she is a co-investigator on another project studying planning for adaptation and resiliency in Canadian local governments.
Dale is a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Sciences, chairs the Canadian Consortium for Sustainable Development Research, a consortium of Canadian research institutes, is a recipient of the 2001 Policy Research Initiative Award for Outstanding Research Contribution to Public Policy for her book, At the Edge: Sustainable Development in the 21st Century and the 2009 Bissett Alumni Award for Distinctive Contributions to the Public Sector. In 2004, in recognition of her research achievements, creativity and social commitment, she became a Trudeau Fellow for three years and is now an alumna with the Trudeau Foundation.
She is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Energy Efficiency, National Resources Canada and was the Founding Research Associate in Residence, Council of Canadian Academies, 2010-2011. She is also a Board Member of the World Fisheries Trust and the Advisory Committee to the Montreal Institute for the Environment.
Before pursuing her academic career, Dale was committed to public service, working for many years in the federal government, including being senior advisor to the first Deputy Minister, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Assistant Director of Policy, Planning and Systems for the Privy Council Office. She was also one of the two civil servants behind the creation of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy in 1988.
Dale holds degrees in psychology and public administration (major in environmental studies) from Carleton University, and a doctorate in Natural Resources Sciences from McGill University.
