Master of Business Administration (Management Consulting Specialization)

Program Admission

Prerequisite(s): N/A

Standard Admission

  • Related undergraduate degree 
  • Normally, minimum 7-10 years of related full-time work experience, with three years at a management level and increasing levels of responsibility (GMAT/GRE is not required). 

Flexible Admission

  • To be considered for Flexible Admission, applicants would normally require a minimum 10-15 years related full-time work experience, with five years at a management level and increasing levels of responsibility (GMAT/GRE is not required). 

Additional Recommendations for Admission

For all applicants, any acquisition of a professional designation, such as a CA, PMP, or other nationally recognized distinctions, should be noted on your resume in your application package.

Applicants must have intermediate computer skills and be very comfortable with the Windows operating system, MS Office (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the use of e-mail (MS Outlook or others), and the use of the Internet for searches. Please see the FAQs page for more information about computer requirements. Please note that all course delivery is designed for a PC environment.  Mac systems may be used, but support and design is not intended for this technical platform.

All applicants who are accepted to the MBA program at Royal Roads University must bring a laptop to all on-campus sessions (Experience Labs) within the MBA program.  Laptops are required for the face-to-face courses that are part of the MBA program.

English is the language of instruction and communication in all programs. All applicants must possess an adequate knowledge of written and spoken English as a prerequisite for admission to the university. For students interested in an MBA in Human Resources Management degree, some if not all of your experience must be in that related field.

Note: Solid academic writing skills are required for success in this program and an English composition course focused on academic writing is strongly recommended. Chicago citation is used in this program. A basic knowledge of accounting principles is also strongly recommended.

Application Requirements

Please follow the standard university requirements with the exception of the following program-specific requirements:

Letters of Reference

One reference letter should be based on work experience and the other based on either academic performance or community service. However, two work-related references are acceptable in certain cases.

The reference letters should confirm that an applicant is a suitable candidate for an MBA program.  The writer(s) should articulate why s/he feels the applicant will succeed in such a program, whether s/he feels it will benefit the applicant (and why), and any other information about the applicant which could identify them as a good fit for the program. The context in which the referee has come to know the applicant should also be mentioned. Length and level of detail in the letters may vary; there is no set standard.

Detailed Resume

A detailed or structured resume one that provides us a comprehensive professional profile of the applicant. We are interested in knowing where an applicant has worked, for how long, and what he or she was responsible for in the positions held. Provide as much information as possible, with special attention to the past ten years of your career.

Your detailed resume should include the following:

  • Work Experience: Months and years of employment
  • Training and Professional Development: List career related training and professional development programs completed with the past five years.  Include the source of training, and the duration and year completed. List other training and personal development programs not already identified. 
  • Voluntary/Unpaid Work Experience: List and describe any voluntary/unpaid post-secondary employment and/or community service experience.  Please include name of organization, length of service and a brief description of duties. 
  • Information Technology Training and Experience: Briefly describe your level of training and experience in the use of information technology including computers, software and telecommunications networks as tools for business, education, teaching and personal use. 
  • Professional Memberships/Affiliations: List memberships and positions you hold/have held in professional associations, service clubs, community/volunteer sector. 
  • Other Relevant Information 

Statement of Intent

The Statement of Intent should consist of (but is not limited to) a two to three page essay, addressing the following four questions:

1) What influenced your decision to apply to Royal Roads University?
2) Why is this degree appropriate for you?
3) What do you hope to contribute to this program and the university?
4) In 5-10 years, how do you anticipate this program will add value?

If there is any other information that you feel might be of interest or relevance to your application, please include it in the Statement of Intent.

Transfer Credit or Advanced Standing 

Programs offered at Royal Roads University are highly integrated and do not lend themselves to module by module credit for advanced standing. There is a policy of allowing students to seek exemption from distance courses on presentation of convincing evidence that they meet all of the requirements for the module. There is no reduction in tuition fees if such exemptions are granted.

The residency periods are of such high value for interpersonal skills building, team building and leadership development that we do not grant exemptions for residency courses.
