Learning Model

Delivery Format

This 33-credit program is delivered over a two-year period. It accommodates students who would benefit most from earning a course-based MA as well as those who would best be served by pursuing a thesis-based MA. In addition, holders of the Teaching and Learning in an Information Technology Environment (TLITE) graduate diploma (Simon Fraser University) will be able to transfer into the program. Finally, for those not wishing to complete an MA at this time, a graduate certificate option is also available.

Course-based MA

Most students will complete the program in two years by completing nine three-credit courses and a six-credit research paper. These courses will consist of two face-to-face courses offered during an on campus residency term and seven courses offered during the distance term. Students taking the course-based route will complete their applied research paper under the guidance of a faculty supervisor.

Thesis-based MA

Upon successful completion of the residency term and the first two distance courses, students may apply to transfer to the 12-credit thesis route. Acceptance into the thesis route will be determined after submitting a Thesis application with a proposal. After completing the first five courses of the program, successful applicants will complete courses in advanced research methods and proposal development course before beginning their research under the guidance of their academic supervisor.

SFU’s TLITE (Teaching and Learning in an Information Technology Environment) Transfer

Qualified TLITE graduates who wish to earn an MA in Learning and Technology upon the Dean’s approval may receive up to 12 transfer credits for related coursework that they successfully completed as part of their graduate certificate program.

Graduate Certificate

A graduate certificate in Learning and Technology will be awarded upon successful completion of a set of five core courses (LRNT 501 – LRNT 505). The certificate program will ladder into the graduate degree program.
