Overview

The BA in Justice Studies program is designed primarily for those students interested in pursuing solutions toward positive social change. Graduates may pursue careers in many areas of the public sector as well as non-profit agencies and other non-government organizations. Additionally, a variety of opportunities exist in criminal justice agencies and other organizations dealing with justice-related issues. Graduates have gone on to work in alternative dispute resolution, community development, probation, policy analysis, advocacy, and the like. Some graduates are continuing their education at law school, while others are pursuing graduate degrees.

We are looking for students who have completed their first two years of an undergraduate degree (either at a college or university), with preference given to those in a justice related degree. Royal Roads University also considers applicants with less than two years through the process of flexible assessment.

This degree will provide students with both the theoretical and practical foundations to critically assess issues related to justice studies. At the end of the program, students will have in-depth knowledge of the justice system, including: criminal justice, human rights, advocacy, conflict resolution, mediation, etc. In fact, due to the increased demand for employees who have a solid understanding of the Canadian and international legal framework and who are familiar with alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, we have added a three-week intensive Alternative Dispute Resolution workshop to the program. Feedback from our students has shown this to be an extremely important addition to our program.

The program provides each student with academic, technical and administrative support to achieve the program's learning outcomes. This is accomplished by the Royal Roads University team comprised of the instructors, program associate and numerous service employees. It is also expected that students in each cohort support each other in their respective learning journeys.

While we train our students on our online computer assisted learning platform, it is expected that students coming into the program are competent with basic programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook and Explorer.

Please note that the two-year distance model is eligible for part-time student loans.
