Who it’s for

The MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding is  for people who are interested in work efforts related to humanitarian intervention, social reconstruction, capacity building or peacebuilding.

Individuals may work in zones of potential conflict, or where intrastate conflict has occurred. It includes those from non-governmental organizations (NGO's), military and civilian peacebuilding operations, international justice and development organizations, as well as Foreign Service personnel.

The program has been designed for individuals who are in the early phase of their careers and foresee long-time service, as well as experienced field workers who wish to prepare themselves for new roles or expanded responsibilities.

Working in conflict or post conflict zones is not required to enter the program. Those who do not have any relevant paid or volunteer experience, and can demonstrate their interest and intentions to work in this field in their application, will be given the opportunity to acquire this experience in two ways: through networking available in the program, and the Professional Field Practice. The Professional Field Practice is a program requirement for graduation for those without demonstrated experience in the field.

Acknowledging the demands and realities of international humanitarian work, this program is aimed at those who have the potential to make a significant contribution to peacebuilding. Equally, it ensures that those in the field do not endanger themselves or others as they carry out their efforts.

Applicants who do not have the formal academic education to qualify for admission may be assessed on the basis of both their formal education and their informal learning, in accordance with the Flexible Admission Policy.
