Asper Foundation Communications Award
The Asper Foundation Communications Award will make available one or more entrance awards to students working in, or seeking to work in, the communications industry. Preference will be given to support a student undertaking an RRU communications-related degree.
Mr. David Asper, former Chair of Publications Committee, CanWest Communications Corp. has been quoted as saying: "A vital part of succeeding in our business is through education and we are confident our donation will provide long-term benefits to the broadcast and communications industries in BC and across the country".
BC Hydro Environmental Scholarships
BC Hydro scholarships are awarded to select students enrolled in Royal Roads University's undergraduate environmental programs who are leaders and role models in their schools and communities, and who demonstrate a balanced lifestyle and commitment to a post-secondary education. BC Hydro believes that creating awareness among the next generation is one of the keys to energy sustainability for our province. That is why many of their scholarships have a link to BC Hydro's guiding principles.
Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Victoria Award in Honour of Elsie M. Stapleford
The generousity of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) had made this award possible. The club is committed to the pursuit of knowledge,promotion of knowledge,improvement of thestatus of women and human rights, and active participation in public affairs.
One entrance award will be made available to a Canadian female resident of British Columbia, undergraduate or graduate student, with a record of academic excellence. Preference will be given to a resident of Victoria, BC with leadership capacity, a track record of community involvement, and interest in the social sciences.
Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Victoria - Helen Joy Russell Bursary #3
Working together for women and girls, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is a volunatry, non-profit, self-funded bilingual organization of close to 10,000 women university graduates. Helen Joy Russell chose to leave the Victoria branch of CFUW a generous portion of her estate for the purpose of continuing its philanthropic work of providing financial aid to deserving women students through bursaries and scholarships. In January 2008, CFUW Victoria established in her name an endowed bursary for MA in International Hotel Management students, to reflect Joy's lifelong enjoyment of international travel.
Chuck Connaghan Memorial Bursary
Charles (Chuck) J. Connaghan was the founding Chair and served on the Peace and Conflict Studies Divisional Advisory Board at Royal Roads University from its inception in 1997. He was the President of C.J. Connaghan & Associates Ltd., an industrial relations and managment consulting firm. Chuck held numerous senior management roles throughout his career inclding Chair, British Columbia Provincial Judges Compensation Committee; Chief Commissioner, British Columbia Treaty Commission; Chair, British Columbia Roundtable on the Environment and Economy; and President, Construction Labour Relations Association of British Columbia. Mr. Connaghan held Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in psychology from the University of British Columbia. He was the recipient of the Great Trekker Award from the University of British Columbia, the Queen's Jubilee Medal, and the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice from the Vatican, and was a Member of the Order of Canada.
Commerce Alumni Award
Royal Roads University is grateful to the students and alumni who continue to contribute to class funds that will support future fellow Bachelor of Commerce students. The support of our staff, students, and alumni is especially important to us. Royal Roads University is relatively young and the students and alumni who establish class funds can feel directly connected to its future growth and success.
Dr. Barry Maber Memorial Award
The Dr. Barry Maber Memorial Award was created by his family to create a lasting legacy in his memory. Dr. Maber was a Saskatoon-based physician enrolled in RRU's MA in Conflict Analysis (MACAM) program when he passed. Well-respected and admired by his colleagues at Royal Roads Univerisity, he was awarded RRU's first posthumous degree. The bursary will be awarded annually to one student enrolled in the second year of the MACAM program.
Dr. Frederic T. Kasravi LL.D Bursary
This bursary was established in memory of Dr. Frederic T. Kasravi LL.D. He was a trusted advisor and received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Royal Roads University in 2003. He was a businessman, entrepreneur and a devoted volunteer. He served his community as Chairperson and member of many boards helping countless organizations with fundraising and organizational skills. Dr. Kasravi lived by Sir Winston Churchill's quote about generosity: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give".
This bursary is available to a Bachelor of Commerce student who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to and involvement in volunteerism in the community.
George and Marjorie New Memorial Award
George New was born in Worthing, Sussex, England, in November 1908 and was brought up in Saskatchewan, Canada. He had a grade eight education; however, he went on to complete university mathematics by home study and through survey school with the Canadian Army. Mr. New’s career included being a farmer, trapper, prospector, and surveyor, as well as serving in the Canadian Army. Mr. New took a great interest in astronomy and teaching and acted as an invigilator for corporation examinations well after his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. New have both passed away. They are survived by two sons, a daughter and grandchildren.
As a result of the generosity of George and Marjorie New, one or more awards will be made available to Royal Roads University School of Environment and Sustainability student(s) who have demonstrated exceptional aptitude in the field of waste management and/or pollution prevention.
Graham Dickson Leadership and Learning Award
The Graham Dickson Leadership and Learning Award, initiated by the staff in the Centre for Applied Leadership and Management (CALM), will support sustainability initiatives and honour Dr. Graham Dickson who has made significant contributions at Royal Roads University in the field of leadership. The award will benefit CALM students who demonstrate social responsibility and community leadership. For many students with professional and academic aspirations, this financial award will help support the realization of their full leadership potential. Donations are accepted from alumni and other friends of CALM who may also wish to contribute to this award.
Laura Vidalis Scholarship
The Laura Vidalis Memorial Scholarship was established by Serge Vidalis in memory of his sister who was completing her MBA in Digital Technologies when she passed away. Serge is a Royal Roads University alumni (MA in Conflict Analysis and Management). Initial contributions and support came from Laura's family, cohort and former colleagues. This scholarship will assist students that Laura would have identified with, mid-career students who are enhancing or changing careers while staying committed to their family and communities.
Minerva Foundation For BC Women Bursary
The Minerva Foundation seeks to create opportunities for B.C. women to realize their economic and leadership potential. The Minerva Foundation is committed to supporting bursaries to assist single mothers at B.C. universities with the costs of tuition, childcare and housing. This bursary for B.C. women seeking to advance their education at Royal Roads University is a result of Minerva Foundation's generosity and partnership with the University. The recipient must be willing to allow the Minerva Foundation to acknowledge them in promotional materials and publications.
Royal Roads University Student Association (RRUSA) Bursary
These bursaries have been made possible by the generous annual contributions from undergraduate students at Royal Roads University which are matched by the university. The bursaries will be available annually to individuals entering one of the undergraduate programs who have made a significant contribution to the community.
T. Hugh McCaw Memorial Bursary
The T. Hugh McCaw Memorial Bursary was initiated by Mr. Thomas Hugh McCaw's daughter and son-in-law, Isabel and Tony Lloyd, and grand-daughters Patricia Kimmett Huxley and Anne Hill Kimmitt. The primary purpose of this bursary is to provide assistance to a First Nations student(s) enrolled in the School of Peace and Conflict Management who demonstrates financial need. Should no eligible candidate apply, First Nations students and other students interested in First Nations studies in other RRU programs will be considered. Preference will be given to School of Peace and Conflict Management students.
Tournament of Aces Bursary
Royal Roads University Foundation started the Tournament of Aces golf event in 2000 to raise funds for bursaries. We thank the many sponsors of this event for their participation in raising much needed educational bursaries for single parents. The endowed Tournament of Aces fund now generates revenue for annual bursaries in perpetuity. Applicant selection for this bursary is based on financial need and must be full time in any graduate or undergraduate program.
Victoria Foundation Ruth Elina Carlson Bursary
Through the request of the late Ruth Elina Carlson, The Victoria Foundation worked in partnership with the Royal Roads University Foundation to establish the Victoria Foundation Ruth Elina Carlson Bursary. Qualified applicants will be able to demonstrate financial need and must have maintained a satisfactory academic standing. Preference will be given to BC residents.
Victoria Natural History Society Bursary
This award has been made available through the generous donation of the Victoria Natural History Society. The award is open to new full-time students in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to applicants who have been active in a natural history or environmental organization.
Victoria Real Estate Board Bursary
This bursary has been made available by the generous donation of the Victoria Real Estate Board, whose mandate is to develop standards and innovative programs aimed at enhancing the professionalism and community standing for realtors. One bursary will be granted to a learner enrolled in a degree program who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to learners who are realtors or employed in the real estate industry in the Greater Victoria area.
WIN Bursary
Victoria Women in Need Community Cooperative is an enterprising, not for profit organization that meets social goals through business ventures. The WIN Bursary was created through the "WIN Self Sufficiency Program" to provide bursaries to women who are transitioning to self sufficiency. This $500 bursary is made availalbe to a single mother living in the Greater Victoria area who is actively enrolled in a program at Royal Roads University.
