Convocation Awards
Governor General's Gold Medal
Presented to the graduating student who has presented the most outstanding thesis or graduate project this year.
Governor General's Silver Medal
Presented to the graduating learner who achieved the highest academic standing upon graduation from a bachelor's degree program this year.
Royal Roads University Chancellor's Award
A plaque presented to one graduating student in each degree program per year in recognition of having achieved the highest academic performance. For offshore programs, the Chancellor's Awards will be bestowed to one student from each of RRU's education partners.
Royal Roads University Founders' Award
A plaque presented to one student in each graduating cohort of a degree program that was primarily delivered in Canada, in recognition of having exemplified the qualities of leadership, sustainability and personal development.
President's Scholar Awards
Awarded to those students who are graduating "with distinction" in the top 10 per cent of the graduating class in each undergraduate degree program.
1st Team Consulting Limited Award
Each year, with the continued support of st Team Consulting, two awards of $500 each will be made available to students in the School of Environment and Sustainability. One to a student project in ENSC 420 - Major Project (data gathering and analysis) as recommended by the Faculty and the second to the top student in ENSC 431 - Air Quality and Wastewater Management.
Brent Mainprize Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award
This award is available to the Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management student who has been actively involved in ACE at Royal Roads University and who best demonstrated outstanding qualities of business ethics, value-based leadership, and portrayed a sense of passion for entrepreneurship, as judged by their peers. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required. BCOM Students who founded ACE Royal Roads in May 2007 set-up and funded this award to honour Brent Mainprize for his dedication and commitment to fostering entrepreneurship at Royal Roads University and for inspiring many BCOM students to develop opportunities, become entrepreneurial-minded, and to "make a difference while making a dollar".
Dr. Nicholas Rubidge Award
This endowment fund has been created in honour of Dr. Nicholas Rubidge. On loan from the British Columbia Ministry of Education, Skills and Training, Dr. Rubidge devoted himself tirelessly to the creation of the vision and direction of Royal Roads University. Presented at fall convocation to the undergraduate student who has made the greatest contribution to student life at Royal Roads University.
Eric C. Douglass Award
The generosity and foresight of Eric and Helena Douglass has made these awards possible through a contribution and bequest from the estate of Eric C. Douglass. Both Eric and Helena were pioneer ranchers in Alberta. Eric was a self-made entrepreneur who started in the construction business at the age of fifteen, he built a significant company that built roads, seismic work in the far North and developed land in the Edmonton area. It was through the Douglass family friendship with Gerry and Ann Kelly that RRU benefited from this first major gift.
One or more awards are available, at a value commensurate with the interest earned on the generous endowment, to RRU Commerce students, undergraduate and graduate, who best demonstrate abilities as entrepreneurs. The Eric C. Douglass Awards are for learners who exhibit Eric's qualities of perseverance, hard work and vision to put ideas into action. The Douglass lecture room in the Nixon block is named in honour of this family's achievements.
Grant Thornton LLP Award
Grant Thornton has made a generous contribution and commitment to RRU to create two awards for students with exceptional organizational skills and commitment. These awards are available to recognize RRU BCom students participating in the organization of any business competitions held at Royal Roads University where our BCom students compete with other business schools (i.e. Case Competitions, Investment Competitions, etc.). The spirit of this award is to recognize the “unsung champions” for their extraordinary contributions behind the scenes determined through peer nomination.
Ng Yuen Sum and Yip Wai Gum Award
This award, aimed to encourage sustainability learning, has been made available through an anonymous contribution. It was established in memory of two beloved fathers who cared for the needs of their families. One award is given to a graduate or undergraduate enrolled in the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University.
McTaggart Cowan Environmental Leadership Award
At the initiative of RRU faculty member Dr. James McTaggart-Cowan, this fund makes available one or more awards to undergraduate students in the RRU School of Environment and Sustainability who have demonstrated environmental leadership through a combination of scholastic achievement, contributions to student life, and community involvement.
McTaggart Cowan Project Leadership Award
RRU faculty member Jim McTaggart-Cowan through his continued demonstrated leadership by action has made this fund possible. The fund presents book prizes to those members of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science graduating class who have been selected by the School for their demonstrated skill in project leadership.
RRU Recycling and Sustainability Award
The award will be offered to one or more individuals who has demonstrated an active involvement in initiatives such as recycling, non-academic environmental projects, competitions, fund-raisers and other events pertaining to environmental sustainability of Royal Roads University and its physical environment. This peer nominated award is made possible through the hard work and diligence of RRU's Custodial and Housekeeping Services staff, who donate proceeds collected through recycling cans and bottles.
Ted Wilson Memorial Award for Lifelong Learning
This endowment fund has been created in honour of Ted Wilson, father of Ann Kelly and father-in-law and dear friend of Royal Roads University’s past president, Dr. Gerry Kelly. Ted was an entrepreneur, artist, and sportsman in India, England and Canada. Ted had an insatiable inquisitiveness for learning, having completed his last course at the age of 86 at Camosun College in Victoria, B.C. The award is presented at fall Convocation to the student who demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning.
