"Big Wally" comes home to Royal Roads

We knew that General Walter Natynczyk was a Royal Roads Military College alumnus, but nobody told us that his nickname as a cadet was Big Wally. Nevertheless . . . it is doubtful that any of us would have referred to Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff with that name when he came home to the grounds he holds responsible for his rugby knees and his leadership skills.

In Victoria to support Boomer’s Legacy (www.boomerslegacy.ca), a campaign that remembers fallen soldier Cpl. Andrew Eykelenboom, General Natynczyk gave a standing-room only crowd in the Castle Drawing Room a compelling presentation the on the state of Canada’s Armed Forces. Among the audience members was RRU staff, faculty, learners and alumni, former RRMC cadets and faculty, members of the local business community and politicians.

From the moment Natynczyk entered room, the audience was captivated with his charm and commanding leadership presence. His presentation gave a comprehensive overview of the status and challenges he faces leading the Canadian Forces and the work it has accomplished and is accomplishing around the world. His talk was complemented by a visually moving presentation of photos of CF members and people from the communities they’re helping.

After Natynczyk answered a few questions from the audience, RRU Fellows Chair and honorary Navy Capt. Cedric Steele presented the general with an RRU Fellows certificate. The General spent some more time answering questions from individuals and posed for countless photos, especially with RRU uniformed learners and alumni. Afterwards, General Natynczyk went into a meeting with President Allan Cahoon, Capt. Steele, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Roger Girouard and other invited guests.

General Natynczyk and his wife, Leslie, are eager to come back for a visit very soon. And with that promise, Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff changed into biking gear and headed out the door to join the Boomer’s Legacy fundraising bike ride to Comox.
